Selecting the right gutter material is a crucial decision for homeowners looking to protect their property from water damage. Gutters are not just a structural necessity but an important component that ensures the longevity and safety of a home. With various materials available on the market, from aluminum and vinyl to copper and steel, homeowners often find themselves overwhelmed with choices. Local roofers, who have extensive experience and knowledge about climate impacts and durability, suggest certain materials over others. In this guide, we will explore the most recommended gutter materials to help make an informed decision.

Why Aluminum Gutters Are a Top Recommendation

Aluminum gutters come highly recommended by roofers for several reasons. They are lightweight, resistant to rust, and relatively easy to install. Aluminum gutters are also available in a variety of colors, making it easier for homeowners to match them with their existing exterior color palettes. Additionally, aluminum is cost-effective and provides good durability in various weather conditions. Roofers often suggest aluminum gutters, especially for those looking for a balance between cost and longevity.

The Pros and Cons of Vinyl Gutters

Vinyl gutters are another popular choice, particularly among homeowners on a tight budget. Vinyl is one of the most economical materials available for gutters. It is resistant to rust and corrosion, which adds to its appeal. Installation is also relatively straightforward, simplifying the process. However, local roofers caution that vinyl gutters may not be ideal for regions with extreme temperature fluctuations as they can become brittle over time, leading to cracks and wear.

Copper Gutters: Durability and Aesthetic Appeal for Your Home

For homeowners seeking the ultimate in durability and aesthetics, copper gutters are often the top recommendation from local roofers. Copper is not only attractive but incredibly durable; according to This Old House, copper gutters can last more than 50 years with proper maintenance, making them a long-term investment. Though copper gutters come with a higher initial cost, their longevity and low maintenance needs often justify the investment. Copper also naturally develops a patina over time, which many find visually appealing. This patina also serves as a protective layer, further enhancing the material's durability. Copper gutters are ideal for homeowners looking for a unique, high-end look that adds both functionality and value to their home. Though the cost is higher, their aesthetic appeal, durability, and minimal upkeep make them a worthy investment for the long term.

Steel Gutters: A Strong and Robust Option for Harsh Climates

Steel gutters offer another durable option, often favored by roofers for their robustness and resistance to physical damage. Steel gutters can withstand heavy rains and strong winds, making them an excellent choice for harsher climates. They are especially suitable for areas prone to extreme weather conditions, as they can handle the stress better than lighter materials. However, they are heavier, which necessitates professional installation, and they are susceptible to rust if not properly maintained. To prevent rust, steel gutters must be coated or painted regularly. The added weight and cost of installation are considerations homeowners must weigh when selecting steel gutters, as the long-term maintenance and initial investment can be higher than other materials.

Seamless Gutters: The Leak-Resistant Choice for Modern Homes

Another option that has gained attention recently is the seamless gutter. Roofers recommend seamless gutters primarily because of their leak-resistant design. Since these gutters are custom-cut to fit the dimensions of a home, they have fewer joints and seams where leaks could potentially develop. While seamless gutters are available in different materials, aluminum and copper are the most popular options. Their ability to effectively manage water flow while providing a sleek aesthetic makes them a top choice among modern homeowners.

Choosing the right gutter material involves considering factors such as budget, climate, aesthetic preferences, and long-term durability. While aluminum and vinyl offer cost-effective and versatile solutions for many homes, copper and steel provide superior durability and aesthetics for those willing to invest more upfront. Seamless gutters are a contemporary option that offers added benefits in terms of leak prevention and appearance. Consulting with local roofers can provide valuable insights specific to your region and home. By considering these expert recommendations, homeowners can make an informed decision that ensures their property is adequately protected from water damage for years to come. We love transforming homes with new roofing systems. Recently we had the opportunity to help give a Puyallup home a facelift with a CertainTeed Presidential TL asphalt roofing shingle. This particular home had an existing wood shake roof on it that was worn and past its useful life. Wood shakes are typically installed on skip sheathing, which consists of boards with spaces in between. You can see that clearly in the pictures below. New roofing systems need a solid roof deck to be installed on in order to meet manufacturer requirements. After tearing off this roof our first order of business was to install a new solid roof deck with 1/2 CDX plywood. Next we apply our synthetic underlayment, ice and water shield, sheet metal flashings, pipe boots vents and shingles. The CertainTeed Presidential TL shingles are the standard for premium designer shingles. They are super heavy weight, thick and are designed to have a authentic wood shake look. This particular homeowner chose charcoal black, which is one of the most popular colors. This roof boasts a 50 year limited lifetime warranty and with our Select Shingle Master warranty certification a 25 year workmanship. When it comes to the integrity of a roofing system, there is more to it than meets the eye! Everything in the building and structural world starts with the foundation. When the foundation is set correctly everything else can be constructed properly. If the foundation is off it affects the rest of the project very much like an airplane that starts 1" off course at the beginning of the flight but ends up miles off from its destination. Its no different on an asphalt roofing system. Even though you don't see the roof deck it's a critical component. It's crucial that your roofing contractor carefully inspects your roof deck to look for any potential rot, water damage, mold or brittle areas. Improperly ventilated homes can contain alot of moisture which can create an atmosphere for attic mold, which is extremely hazardous for your health. If the underside of your decking is full of attic mold all or some of the plywood needs to be replaced. Failed shingles, high or low nail placement, broken vents or pipe boots among other issues can cause roof leaks and water intrusion. Consistent water intrusion creates rot. The fasteners for the new shingle system will not hold in soft or rotten plywood. This can create premature failure and shingle blow off in moderate or high winds. Car decking roof decks can also present a problem. While they technically meet manufacturer codes the older wood is often extremely dry and brittle and does not hold fasteners. At Bates Roofing we utilize the best practice approach in every aspect of our business. All plywood is inspected and compromised plywood is removed and replaced to create a smooth solid substrate. A smooth substrate is also important as large variations in the plywood placement will telegraph through the asphalt shingles over time and give a new roof an ugly appearance. We are a safe choice for your roof replacement because we don't cut corners! We meet the highest level of Washington State codes, NRCA requirements and manufacturer expectations for upgraded system warranties. Below are some "found in the field" examples of replacing bad plywood during a reroof job. Thank you for choosing Bates Roofing as your local roofing contractor.

The very best accolade we can earn as a contractor is the referral of one of our customers. That says more about our level of customer service than anything else. Hiring a contractor in the roofing business is risky business! In fact the department of labor and industry reports that 80% of roofing contractors will go out of business within the first year of opening their doors. Another huge percentage of contractors will go out of business by year 5. With those facts in mind, for a homeowner to trust you enough to refer you their family or friends based on their experience with you is a incredible complement. We just recently had an amazing experience with a family that we earned that level of trust! In fact we installed three full roofing systems for one family! We are grateful to this amazing family for their business and also incredibly grateful for our Bates Roofing family of employees that produce such a great customer experience that our community feels this strongly about sharing our services . In Western Washington it rains 9 months out of the year. We live in a literal rain forest. The high level of precipitation creates the beautiful, green landscape that is our home. With the rain however we also experience challenges that dryer and warmer climates do not encounter. Waterproofing structures is one of those challenges. When you get as much rain as the Puget Sound you absolutely cannot cut corners with waterproofing applications. The roof of every structure in particular must be installed correctly as its going to be bombarded year round. I met with a roofing installer that moved to California for a new beginning after being in Washington State for a few decades. He went to work for a larger roofing contractor in a dry climate area. After about a year he moved back. In our discussions about the industry he stated the roofing applications and practices he was seeing in California would never stand up to the test our roofs go through in California. Washington roofing contractors are required to install roofs correctly and according to manufacturer recommendations and specifications. Our unique climate often requires us to reroof year round. A huge portion of the roofing takes place from May through October but roofing continues right through the winter here. In other states where they have a "rainy season" they might shut down for a large part of the 3 months they get rain, but here if we shut down due to heavy rain nobody would be in business and homes would be leaking, taking unnecessary damage. Bates Roofing has over 40 years of experience operating under the same original license we opened with. You heard that right OVER 40 years. When it comes to winter reroofs there are not companies in our area with more experience. You can trust us to take the proper precautions to ensure that we replace your roof without allowing damage to your home during the process. Our large and experienced crews typically finish an average size roof in 1-1.5 days so getting your roof torn off, dried in and water tight happens so fast there isn't time damage. We will not put your home at risk. If we see that the weather is not going to be conducive we will not start your job. People over profits! Winter roofing in the Puget Sound can be done safely with Bates Roofing! We are your premier and trusted roofing service provider for over 40 years!
